This is one of those genuinely rare spots that can only really exist properly in Chicago.

Tucked under the stairs near the back entrance of the Drake Hotel is Coq d'Or. It's one of the oldest speakeasies in the city that's still up and running.

The vibe is something akin to the Orient Express. It's old-timey high class, and surprisingly, those spots are rare in Chicago. The Cherry Circle Room and The Milk Room had something similar going for them, but they've both shut down.

It's a small spot, but if you walk in, you'll notice a lot of well dressed patrons. My theory is that the proximity to the Gold Coast, and it's general vibe, attracts a lot of wealthier, older individuals.

My buddy Frankie Greco gave it a visit recently, and enjoyed it, but accidentally went the night the Bears were playing the Packers, so the bar had set up two TVs to watch the game. That killed the vibe a little bit, and you know how excited Bears fans are, so it was overall a bit hectic.

During my visit, I don't remember TVs set up, but they might be a permanent fixture, which is something to take into account if you're looking for a truly vintage experience.

Regardless, I highly recommend it. There aren't many spots left in the city with it's unique aesthetic.
