Speakeasy
102 Norfolk St, New York, NY 10002
Extremely well done
The Back Room is your prohibition, 1920's speakeasy dream, and it's one of the best hidden speakeasies I've ever seen.
It's entrance really is everything IĀ could hope for.
On the street, you'll see a small gate blocking a stairway down. The gate should have a little sign for a toy company on it, but I think they take it down sometimes.
Open the gate, go down the stairs, and through the long, spooky alleyway.
You'll see more stairs at the end - climb up them, and you'll find a black door on your right.
You have to knock - which makes it even sexier. Someone will let you in.
Now, all this drama is well and good, but this place has been around for some time and it's gotten very popular.
Of course, it's popular for good reasons. It's absolutely awesome. But because of the foot traffic on popular nights it might not be a totally clandestine experience.
Inside, it's decorated like an honest-to-god 1920s speakeasy joint, and they have old-school live jazz shows and more to fit the bill even further.
I could keep gushing about this spot - I'd rank it towards the top in New York's scene.
Definitely check it out if you're anywhere near the city.
